When to Seek Immediate Care
Eye emergencies are characterized by severe, sudden symptoms or situations that require immediate attention. It’s crucial to be aware of the signs that indicate an eye emergency, as early intervention can make a significant difference in preserving your vision and preventing further complications.
Some common signs of an eye emergency include:
Intense and persistent eye pain should never be ignored and warrants immediate attention.
If you experience a sudden and significant decrease in vision, it could indicate a serious underlying issue that requires urgent evaluation.
Any injury to the eye, such as a foreign object entering the eye or a blunt force impact, should be considered an emergency.
If your eyes come into contact with a hazardous substance, it is essential to seek immediate medical help to prevent potential damage and vision loss.
Severe redness, swelling, discharge, and increased sensitivity to light may indicate a severe eye infection that requires immediate treatment.
What to Do in an Eye Emergency
During an eye emergency, it is crucial to act promptly to protect your vision and preserve your eye health. If you experience an eye emergency during our business hours, contact our office right away. Our knowledgeable staff can provide guidance and arrange for you to receive urgent care from our experienced eye care professionals.
Here are some other immediate steps to take in different types of eye emergencies:
If you experience a blunt force impact to the eye, such as from a sports injury or accident, avoid touching or rubbing the affected eye. Apply a protective shield, such as a paper cup or the bottom of a clean plastic container, over the eye, and seek immediate medical attention.
If a foreign object, such as a piece of metal or glass, enters the eye, do not attempt to remove it yourself. Gently cover the eye with a protective shield or a clean cloth and seek immediate medical assistance.
If you get chemicals in your eyes, wash your hands with soap and water, then immediately flush the affected eye with clean, cool tap water for 15 minutes while holding your eyelid open. After flushing, remove your contact lenses if necessary, and seek medical attention as soon as possible.
If you suddenly experience flashes of light, a curtain-like shadow over your vision, or a sudden increase in floaters, it could be a sign of a retinal detachment or another serious condition. Contact Sage Eyecare immediately or go to the nearest emergency room for evaluation.
