A Path to Clear Vision

Having to wear contacts and glasses every day can be frustrating, but deciding to undergo laser eye surgery can be nerve-wracking as well. Our experienced team at Sage Eyecare is here to help you understand the options that might be right for you, and be part of the path towards healthy, clear vision.

What Is Refractive Eye Surgery?

Refractive eye surgery is a procedure designed to correct common vision problems such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. It aims to reduce dependency on glasses or contact lenses by reshaping the cornea, the transparent front part of the eye.

2 common types of refractive eye surgeries are LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis) and PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy). Although both procedures can be effective for improving vision, they differ in certain aspects.

LASIK is a popular refractive surgery that involves creating a thin flap on the cornea through the use of a specialized laser. The flap is lifted to expose the underlying corneal tissue, which is then reshaped. The laser precisely removes tissue to help correct the refractive error and improve visual acuity. Once the cornea is reshaped, the flap is repositioned, acting as a natural bandage.

The advantages of LASIK include rapid visual recovery, usually within a day or two, and minimal discomfort during the healing process. Some patients experience improved vision immediately after the procedure. LASIK is suitable for individuals with a sufficient corneal thickness and stable prescription.

PRK is an alternative procedure for individuals who may not qualify for LASIK due to thinner corneas or certain corneal conditions. In PRK, the outer layer of the cornea, known as the epithelium, is gently removed to expose the underlying corneal tissue. A laser is then used to reshape the cornea and correct the refractive error.

While PRK may involve a slightly longer recovery period compared to LASIK, it can achieve comparable visual outcomes. The epithelium regenerates naturally over time, but patients may experience some discomfort during the healing process. PRK is often recommended for individuals with thinner corneas or irregular corneal surfaces.
